Brownfields in a Box Now Available
through Western PETE!
Western PETE, in partnership with ATEEC, now offers the
interactive CD-ROM Brownfields in a Box. This interactive,
multi-disciplinary instructional aid integrates math, science,
critical thinking, communications, and environmental technology.
What is a Brownfield?
The EPA defines brownfields as "abandoned, idled, or under-used
industrial and/or commercial facilities where further expansion
or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived
environmental contamination."
Through interactive CD-ROM, the participants work individually,
or in teams, to research the problems and issues of brownfields
in Anyplace, USA. These individuals or teams are the
"stakeholders" of Anyplace: government officials, real estate
agents, insurance representatives, factory owners, unemployed
workers, residents, and state/federal agency representatives.
They wrestle with the real-life concerns faced by any community
with environmental issues to be resolved. The final activity is
a role play of a town meeting where all of the stakeholders come
together to try to reach consensus on what should be done with
the various brownfield sites in the city.
Brownfields in a Box has two CD-ROM's that contain the following
